FG permits SON to jail substandard product dealers for 10yrs without the option of a fine

The Federal Government has given authorization to Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to imprison dealers who sell substandard products. They said SON has the authorization to jail defectors for ten years. SON has since started with Tyre dealers. They have given a 24 hours ultimatum to tyre dealers all over the country to destroy every fake tyre in their stock or face 10 years imprisonment without any option of a fine.
Acting Director General of SON, Dr. Paul Angya, gave the ultimatum at a stakeholder’s forum for tyre dealers in Lagos, stating. He said fake tyres have been the leading cause of several deaths in the country based on a recent report by the Road Safety Commission. Adding that out of 8,986 accidents recorded in 2015, 722 were due to tyre bursts, which has led to the death of 446 persons
He said:
“Our new Act 2015 empowered us to jail promoters of sub-standard product up to 10 years and we will not relent to jail any culprit. ‘’We are going to stamp out corruption among the tyre dealers, “we are going to set up a taskforce and we will not sleep until we confirm that accidents in the country are not traced to substandard tyres again.”
“We are ready to eliminate importation of sub-standard products into Nigeria, because of this we have reached out to other government agencies to ensure that we work together and stop smugglers of fake products into the country.
“If you have fake tyre in your shop make sure you disposed them in the next 24 hours, thereafter our team will visit you and we will charge you for murderer. “To eliminate corruption from SON, we are going to introduce e-payment, e-invoice and e-receipt to stamp out corruption from the system,”
He said the organization is also working on improving the standard of products that are sold to consumers.
Adding:
“To ease our work and improve quality of goods and products in Nigeria, we are working to improve expansion of SON facilities across the country so that people in Sokoto will not travel to Maiduguri to text their products”
“What many of our farmers do before they can take their products to abroad is to first take it to Ghana laboratory for text, once the goods pass through text in Ghana the products will send to abroad in the name of Ghana and Ghana government will take the glory.”

Americans were stuck in traffic for 8 billion hours in 2015

Pity the Angeleno with a crosstown commute.
Los Angeles has the worst traffic of any U.S. city in terms of average time wasted per commuter, according to a 2015 traffic scorecard from transportation analytics firm Inrix.
Los Angeles snagged the top spot with 81 hours spent in traffic per commuter in 2015. Residents of Washington, D.C. and San Francisco were a little better off -- but not much. They tied for second with 75 wasted hours per year.
It's not all bad news, however. Inrix said that increased traffic often comes hand-in-hand with economic advances.
"Cities that have experienced the most economic improvement during the past year are at highest risk for consequences related to worsened traffic conditions, including reduced productivity, higher emissions and increased stress levels," the company said in a news release.
INRIX said across commuters spent more than 8 billion extra hours of traffic across the U.S. in 2015.
Here's the complete ranking of time wasted per commuter:
Los Angeles -- 81 hours/year
Washington, D.C. -- 75 hours
San Francisco -- 75 hours
Houston -- 74 hours
New York -- 73 Hours
Seattle, Wash. -- 66 hours
Boston -- 64 hours
Chicago -- 60 hours
Atlanta -- 59 hours
Honolulu -- 49 hours
How do those commute times compare to European cities? Only London ranked higher than Los Angeles, with 101 hours of delay per user.

Maria Sharapova: Tennis star suspended by United Nations

Maria Sharapova's failed drugs admission has prompted the United Nations to suspend the Russian from working with the organization.
Worth an estimated $195 million, Sharapova will be unable to continue her work as a goodwill ambassador with the U.N. Development Program until the conclusion of the investigation into her admission that she tested positive for the banned substance meldonium at the Australian Open in January.
"The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) remains grateful to Maria Sharapova for her support of our work, especially around the Chernobyl nuclear disaster recovery," said a UNDP spokesperson.
"However, in light of Ms. Sharapova's recent announcement, we last week suspended her role as a Goodwill Ambassador and any planned activities while the investigation continues. We wish Ms. Sharapova the best."
The 28-year-old, who was paid a symbolic $1 salary in her role, said at the time that it was one of her "proudest contracts ever."

30 children die in fresh outbreak of Diarrhea in Imo state

No fewer than 30 children have died in a fresh outbreak of Diarrhea in Imo state. According to Leadership, the state commissioner for Health, Ngozi Njoku disclosed this while speaking with a delegation from the Nigeria Agip Oil Company Limited who paid her a courtesy visit in her office yesterday March 14th.
She attributed the recent development to unavailability of portable water in some of the autonomous communities in the state where the disease is prevalent. Njoku said that the death toll from the outbreak of the deadly disease had risen to 30 in the last few weeks, while several others affected by the scourge were receiving treatment in various hospitals in the state. She added that four children died last month as a result of the infection in Nekede, in the Owerri West council area.

Photos: How a young man was brutally beaten, killed and burnt to death over N10 in Apo, Abuja

A young man identified as Ikechukwu Anigbo was reportedly killed and burnt to death over the weekend around a relaxation centre in Apo Mechanic Village, Abuja.
According to reports, the 32-year-old barber from Aku, Enugu State took a bike and argument ensued between him and the motorcycyclist when he paid. The man insisted his money is N60 instead of N50. It was alleged that attracted his colleagues to the scene by shouting "thief".

The mob gathered and started beating Ikechukwu after which they set him ablaze.
Confirming the tragic incident, Mr. Ezema Virginius Chukwudike, the taskforce chairman of Abuja Spares Dealers Association, Apo, said "The mob that gathered following the alarm collected tyres from a vulcanising workshop near the scene and set the deceased on fire"
The next day, angry Igbo men in Apo blocked the road and started attacking any vehicle or Keke Napep with Hausa person or people who look like Hausa. Fortunately, the police were able to stop the riot before it escalated.
Speaking to Daily Trust, a friend of the deceased, Chukwudi Orji said he learnt about Ikechuwu's death when he got home at about 11p.m.

"I saw the fire, but I did not know that someone was inside. There was smoke everywhere; there was no way you would have known that there was someone in the fire, except you were there or somebody told you about it," he said.
"If I had known about it on time, I would have tried to save him because he was innocent," he added.
Speaking further, Mr Chukwudike said, "When news of the incident spread, people became angry. They wondered why the motocyclists would burn an innocent man. Even the man who voluntered to carry the corpse after he had been killed, was chased away"
He said this is not the first time that motorcyclists are killing someone over a paltry sum of money.
"A similar thing happened in Kabusa, when a boy was stabbed because of change. Another man was killed on Wumba road. The same change issue led to the death of a man in Damagaza. In his case, after he was killed, they kept him near a river until the next day," he said.
Chukwudike said the last time such an incident occurred in the area, the traders protested and that it took the intervention of riot policemen to bring the situation under control.

"Because the motorcyclists knew what they did, they boycotted this route from Sunday evening until policemen were deployed to the area."
Azeez Akinola, Anigbo’s boss at the barbershop, corroborated Chukwudike story, saying the attitude of motorcyclists in the area is a cause for concern. Akinola who lives around the area where the late Anigbo lived, said he and two other people rushed out of their houses when they received news of the incident, but that the motorcyclists at Kabusa junction refused to take them to the scene.
Akinola who had worked with Anigbo for more than four years in a small barbershop at NEPA Junction, Apo, said it took them a longtime to find a motorcycle to convey them.
He said when they arrived the scene, they saw several people with sticks, but that they did not understand the magnitude of what had happened until someone pointed to the corpse of Anigbo in the fire.
"I could not believe it. There were heaps of iron treads from the burnt tyres on his body," Akinola said amidst tears.
"He was very gentle," Akinola continued." If small wound touch am, he go treat am for more than one week. I.K. can’t ride a bicycle, talk less of motorcycle.  Because of fear, he refused to learn driving despite the fact that they were many people around to teach him," he said.
He said the matter was reported at the Apo Police Station, where he wrote a statement before police officers took the corpse to a mortuary.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the FCT police command, ASP Anjuguri Manzah said, "there was an early morning disagreement between two opposing groups that could have resulted in a clash but it was averted by the timely intervention of anti-riot police personnel."
Manzah said the FCT Commissioner of Police, Wilson Inalegwu, warned people of the area to desist from violence at the wake of the disagreement and promptly deployed police officers to the scene. The commissioner assured residents of the area and other parts of FCT that adequate measures have been deployed to contain the situation, investigate and unravel the remote and underlying issues behind the upheaval.
He reiterated that any attempt to jeopardise the existing peaceful and serene atmosphere in the Federal Capital Territory will not be tolerated. Though normalcy has returned to the area, the relative peace enjoyed may not last for long if a lasting solution is not proffered. Chukwudike said government should stop motorcyclists from arming themselves with daggers.
"Why should government allow them to move around with daggers unchallenged?" he asked.
There are several versions of the incident, while some insist that the late Anigbo did not commit any crime, some alleged that he attempted to snatch the motorcycle he rode to the junction but was overpowered by the motorcyclists.  However, it is hoped that the police through their investigation will be able to give a clearer picture of what actually transpired.

What is Lassa fever

Lassa fever is a virus spread by rats that is endemic in Sierra Leone, Liberia, New Guinea and Nigeria, according to the CDC.
Symptoms can be similar to Ebola, including hemorrhagic fever and bleeding, although 80% of patients experience mild symptoms and can even go undiagnosed, according to the World Health Organization.
Lassa fever is deadly in about 1% of all individuals. Among those who require hospitalization for their illness, 15% do not survive.
New Jersey man dies of Lassa fever
Unlike Ebola, Lassa fever is not spread from person to person. People become infected from contact with urine or feces of an infected rat, which sometimes happens from food. Breathing particles in the air from infected rat feces can also lead to infection. Coming into direct contact with bodily fluids from an infected person can also lead to infection, although this is rare.
Symptoms begin one to three weeks after a person is infected.
The virus can be treated with the antiviral drug Ribavirin.
Lassa fever infects an estimated 100,000 to 300,000 people in West Africa each year and is responsible for 5,000 deaths

CDC: U.S patient has lassa fever

A Lassa fever diagnosis has been confirmed for a patient at Emory University Hospital, a CDC spokesman told CNN on Sunday.
Test results for the patient "were positive for Lassa fever," Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spokesman Benjamin Hayes said.
Doctors had suspected the patient, an American physician's assistant who'd been working with a missionary organization in Togo, had the virus. At the request of the U.S. State Department, the individual was transported from West Africa to the Atlanta hospital for treatment.
The patient is being treated at the university's Serious Communicable Diseases Unit, where four U.S. patients were treated for Ebola in 2014.
"We are continuing to treat the patient for symptoms of febrile illness," Emory spokeswoman Holly Korschun said

The comment caused widespread criticism on social media and spawned a Twitter hashtag calling for him to be tried.
Al-Zind quickly issued an apology, describing the comment as a "slip of the tongue."

Malawi president comes for T.B Joshua, calls him a liar and a fake

Yesterday, the president of Malawi Peter Mutharika slammed T.B Joshua over a prophecy he made recently. Sometime in January, T.B Joshua said a president in Southern African will die before April 1st.. "End of February to April this year, peculiar months for Southern Africa." Joshua said
Reacting, Mutharika, who became president in 2014 said “I’m told there is a man in Nigeria called Joshua and he is saying that Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and Peter Mutharika will die before April 1. Let me tell you, Joshua… you will fail. What you did in 2012 will not happen again this year,” the president said on state TV. Now, what did Joshua do in 2012 that got the president scared?

In 2012 Joshua said  He predicted the death of a president of an unnamed southern African country. Mutharika’s brother, Bingu, who was president at the time, died within the predicted time frame.
President Mutharika then used his church building collapse to mock Joshua
"Why did he not foretell this tragedy? This all shows that he is a liar. He just wants to raise money”
